FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized, patient-centered approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of illness or dysfunction. It considers the interconnectedness of various biological systems and factors such as genetics, lifestyle, environment, and nutrition.

  • How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?

Functional medicine differs from conventional medicine in its emphasis on personalized care, addressing the root cause of health issues, and focusing on preventive measures rather than just symptom management. It takes a holistic approach to health and wellness, considering the whole person rather than just isolated symptoms or conditions.

  • What conditions can functional medicine help with?

Functional medicine can help with a wide range of health issues, including chronic diseases such as high blood sugars, autoimmune conditions, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and mental health concerns. It is particularly effective for conditions where the underlying causes may be complex and multifactorial.

  • How does functional medicine diagnosis work?

Functional medicine diagnosis involves a comprehensive assessment of a patient's medical history, lifestyle factors, genetic predispositions, and environmental influences. This may include specialized laboratory tests, such as comprehensive blood panels, stool analysis, hormone testing, and genetic testing, to uncover underlying imbalances or dysfunction.

  • What treatments are used in functional medicine?

Treatments in functional medicine are tailored to each individual and may include dietary and lifestyle modifications, targeted nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, stress management techniques, detoxification protocols, and mind-body therapies. The goal is to restore balance and optimize the body's natural healing mechanisms.

  • Is functional medicine covered by insurance?

Unfortunately no! We do not. While some aspects of functional medicine, such as diagnostic testing and consultations, may be covered by insurance, other treatments and interventions may be considered elective and may not be covered.  However,We do offer several options, including payment plans, to pay for our services. There may be times when some of the lab work could be billed through Insurance, however, we discourage this as our lab prices are generally cheaper than your portion using insurance would be.

  • Is functional medicine suitable for everyone?

Functional medicine can benefit individuals of all ages and health statuses, but it may be particularly beneficial for those with chronic or complex health issues, as well as individuals who are interested in taking a proactive approach to their health and wellness. However, it's essential to consult with a qualified functional medicine practitioner to determine if it's the right approach for you.

  • Is functional medicine evidence-based?

Functional medicine draws on both traditional medical knowledge and emerging research. While it may incorporate alternative therapies, the approach is rooted in scientific evidence. Practitioners stay updated on the latest research to provide the best possible care.

Functional nutrition, also known as functional medicine nutrition, is an approach to nutrition that focuses on addressing the root causes of health concerns rather than just treating symptoms. Here's a basic overview, or "Functional Nutrition 101," covering what you need to know: 1. Holistic Perspective: Functional nutrition views the body as an interconnected system, recognizing that imbalances in one area can affect overall health. It considers factors such as genetics, environment, lifestyle, and diet in assessing health and wellness. 2. Individualized Approach: There's no one-size-fits-all approach in functional nutrition. Each person is unique, so recommendations are tailored to individual needs, preferences, and health goals. This may involve personalized dietary plans, lifestyle modifications, and targeted supplementation. 3. Focus on Root Causes: Instead of simply addressing symptoms, functional nutrition aims to identify and address the underlying root causes of health issues. This might include factors such as nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, gut dysbiosis, hormonal imbalances, or environmental toxins. 4. Emphasis on Nutrient-Dense Foods: Functional nutrition promotes a whole-foods-based diet rich in nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that support optimal health and vitality. 5. Gut Health Optimization: Functional nutrition places particular emphasis on gut health, recognizing its critical role in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and overall well-being. Strategies to support gut health may include consuming fermented foods, prebiotics, probiotics, and minimizing intake of inflammatory foods. 6. Inflammation Management: Chronic inflammation is linked to numerous health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. Functional nutrition aims to reduce inflammation through dietary interventions, such as avoiding processed foods, sugar, refined grains, and incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like fatty fish, leafy greens, and turmeric. 7. Lifestyle Modifications: In addition to dietary changes, functional nutrition often incorporates lifestyle modifications to support optimal health. This may include stress management techniques, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, and reducing exposure to environmental toxins. 8. Collaborative Approach: Functional nutrition practitioners often work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, naturopaths, and integrative medicine specialists. This interdisciplinary approach allows for comprehensive evaluation and management of health concerns. 9.Education and Empowerment: Functional nutrition empowers individuals to take an active role in their own health and well-being. Through education, coaching, and support, individuals learn to make informed choices about their diet and lifestyle, leading to sustainable changes and long-term health benefits. 10. Continuous Evaluation and Adjustment: Health is dynamic, and functional nutrition recognizes that needs may change over time. Regular evaluation and adjustment of dietary and lifestyle strategies are essential to support ongoing health optimization and prevent future health issues. Overall, functional nutrition offers a holistic and individualized approach to health and wellness, focusing on addressing the root causes of health concerns and promoting optimal function of the body's systems. By adopting principles of functional nutrition, individuals can improve their health, vitality, and overall quality of life.

Functional nutrition and traditional nutrition are two different approaches to understanding and managing dietary patterns and their impact on health. Here's a breakdown of the key differences between the two: 1.Philosophy: Functional Nutrition: Functional nutrition takes a holistic and personalized approach to health, focusing on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. It views the body as an interconnected system, recognizing the influence of genetics, environment, lifestyle, and diet on overall health and well-being. Traditional Nutrition: Traditional nutrition typically follows more conventional dietary guidelines and recommendations based on population-wide data and epidemiological studies. It often focuses on macronutrient and micronutrient intake, with less emphasis on individualized needs and underlying imbalances. 2. Individualization: Functional Nutrition: Functional nutrition emphasizes the importance of individualized care, recognizing that each person has unique genetic makeup, lifestyle factors, and health concerns. Recommendations are tailored to address specific needs, preferences, and goals, taking into account factors such as genetics, gut health, inflammation, and hormonal balance. Traditional Nutrition: Traditional nutrition guidelines are often generalized recommendations based on population averages and nutritional science. While they provide a framework for healthy eating, they may not consider individual variations in metabolism, nutrient absorption, and underlying health conditions. 3.Focus on Root Causes: Functional Nutrition: Functional nutrition seeks to identify and address the underlying root causes of health issues, such as nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, gut dysbiosis, hormonal imbalances, and environmental toxins. By addressing these root causes, functional nutrition aims to promote optimal health and prevent chronic disease. Traditional Nutrition: Traditional nutrition may focus more on managing symptoms through dietary interventions, such as reducing calorie intake for weight loss or lowering cholesterol levels through dietary modifications, without always addressing the underlying factors contributing to these issues. 4. Approach to Disease Management: Functional Nutrition: Functional nutrition takes a preventive and integrative approach to disease management, aiming to optimize health and prevent chronic conditions by addressing underlying imbalances and promoting holistic well-being. Traditional Nutrition: Traditional nutrition often focuses on managing diseases through dietary modifications and medication, with less emphasis on addressing underlying imbalances or incorporating complementary therapies. 5. Interdisciplinary Collaboration Functional Nutrition: Functional nutrition practitioners often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, naturopaths, and integrative medicine specialists, to provide comprehensive care and address the diverse needs of individuals. Traditional Nutrition: Traditional nutrition may be more closely aligned with mainstream healthcare systems, with less integration of complementary or alternative approaches to health and wellness. In summary, while traditional nutrition provides valuable guidelines for healthy eating based on population-wide data, functional nutrition offers a more personalized and holistic approach to health and wellness, focusing on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues to promote optimal function and well-being.
